Sperm and semen freezing

Sperm freezing stores a semen sample so it can be used later in fertility treatment. It may be considered before medical treatment, before procedures that could affect sperm production, or to have a backup sample available for IVF or ICSI.

What sperm freezing is

A semen sample is collected, assessed, mixed with a cryoprotectant, and frozen in the laboratory. Thawed sperm may later be used for IUI, IVF, or ICSI depending on quality and the treatment plan.

Who may consider sperm freezing

Men may consider semen freezing before certain surgeries or therapies, when work or travel makes providing a fresh sample on egg-retrieval day difficult, or when sperm parameters are already a concern and a stored sample is medically useful.

Collection, storage, and future use

Collection is usually by masturbation in a private room at the clinic, following simple instructions (including abstinence timing). Infectious-disease screening and consent are part of responsible storage. Future use is planned with your fertility specialist.

Frequently asked questions

Is sperm freezing the same as semen freezing?

People use both terms. The sample frozen is semen, which contains sperm. After thaw, sperm are prepared for treatment.

Will frozen sperm always work for IUI?

Not always. After thaw, numbers and motility may be lower. Some couples need IVF or ICSI instead. Your clinician will advise.
