Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT)

PGT refers to laboratory testing of embryos created by IVF before transfer. It may be considered in selected medical situations. PGT does not guarantee a healthy baby or a successful pregnancy.

What PGT is

During an IVF cycle, a few cells may be sampled from a developing embryo (embryo biopsy) and sent for genetic analysis. Embryos that are reported as suitable may then be considered for transfer, often in a frozen cycle.

Why PGT may be considered

Possible reasons include recurrent miscarriage, repeated implantation failure, known inherited genetic conditions in the family, or other specialist indications. It is not a routine add-on for every IVF cycle.

PGT-A, PGT-M, and PGT-SR

In broad terms, PGT-A looks at chromosome copy number, PGT-M looks for a specific inherited gene condition when that condition is known, and PGT-SR relates to structural chromosome rearrangements. Whether any of these is appropriate depends on genetics counselling and clinical review.

Limitations

Testing can be inconclusive. Mosaic results can be difficult to interpret. Not all genetic conditions are detectable. Biopsy and freezing add complexity. Your team should explain benefits, uncertainties, and cost implications before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Does PGT replace prenatal testing in pregnancy?

No. Pregnancy care may still include screening or diagnostic tests recommended by your obstetric team.

Is PGT the same as PGS or PGD?

Older names such as PGS and PGD are still used by some patients. PGT is the current umbrella term. Your clinician will use the name that matches the test proposed.
