Ovulation induction

Ovulation induction aims to help the ovaries release an egg more predictably when ovulation is absent or irregular. It is often considered for people with PCOS-related ovulation problems or other ovulatory disorders, after evaluation.

Who may benefit

It may help those who do not ovulate regularly, including some women with PCOS, provided other fertility factors are reviewed. It is not suitable for everyone, for example when both tubes are blocked.

Monitoring and medicines

Treatment is monitored with ultrasound and sometimes blood tests to reduce the risk of over-response. Medicines and doses are prescribed only after a clinician reviews you in person. This website does not list drug names with dosages.

Possible next steps

If ovulation induction alone is not enough, timed intercourse, IUI, or IVF may be discussed. See also our PCOS clinic page.

Frequently asked questions

Can ovulation induction cause twins?

Stimulating more than one follicle can increase the chance of a multiple pregnancy. Monitoring is used to keep treatment as safe as possible.

Is it the same as IVF?

No. Ovulation induction supports egg release. IVF involves egg collection and laboratory fertilisation.
